  • Origin of Chinese pastries

Chinese pastries have a long history in China.According to old folk stories, the earliest form of pastries appeared during the Shang and Zhou period. People say that during King Wu’s campaign, a famous general named Wen Taishi created a simple pastry by mixing cooked sugar with grains. This sweet, solid food was easy to carry, and many believe it became the first version of Chinese pastries.

As time passed, people continued to change and improve these early pastries.Folk stories describe how these simple sweets slowly developed into many types of pastries with crispy layers, soft fillings, and different cooking methods.

The idea of “dim sum” also has folk origins. Long ago, people ate small snacks in the morning, which were simply called “early meals.” Another old story says that during the Song Dynasty, someone was moved by how hard soldiers fought in battle and made small pastries to comfort them. These snacks were called “dian xin,” meaning “to touch the heart.”Many say that the name dian xin has been around for over a thousand years, showing how long Chinese pastry culture has existed.
